RECAP: Seaweed Beer Competition at Loyal Legions

February 21, 2024 — Loyal Legion , SE Portland, OR

The Oregon Seaweed Beer Challenge was such a hit! We, somewhat unexpectedly, packed the Loyal Legion tap house, with over 100 people coming through the doors to taste seaweed beers. As a relatively last minute plan for the 2024 series, we were very happy to get four breweries interested in making seaweed beers, two from Portland (Binary and Duality) and two from the coast (Sisu and Obelisk).

We also had a stacked judging panel with Andre Meunier (The Oregonian), Ron Scott (Eater Portland), and Warren Wills (Craft Beer Scribe), who not only judged our seaweed beers but made a sweet video of the whole evening (see below)!

Beers on the menu were:

Duality Brewing - “In the Weeds”
Amber with dulse, licorice root, and elderflower

Binary Brewing - “La Dulse Vida”
Scottish Ale with dried and fresh seaweed

Obelisk Beer Co - “Sun Shrine Kolsch”
Kolsch with Dulse Seaweed and Yuzu Juice

Sisu Brewing Co - “Nakkai” —
Stout with Oregon Seaweeds Pacific Dulse

All beers contained fresh, or dried (or both) Pacific Dulse seaweed from Oregon Seaweed.

In addition to offering flights of all four seaweed beers, Loyal Legion offered seaweed additions to their bar snacks. Attendees could add Blue Evolution chipotle lime seaweed seasoning to their tots or fries, with $1 donations on each purchase going to our non-profit partner The Oregon Kelp Alliance.
