RECAP: Ippai x Basalt Studio Pop Up

February 22, 2024, Cannon Beach, OR

Such a sweet and humble event with so much joy, laugher, and creative culinary education!
Basalt Studio is a precious ceramic studio in Cannon Beach, owned by local artist Michelle Valigura. Ceramic studio by day, instant ramen and sake bar by night! And turns out, the best location for an intimate seafare experience.

Chef Jane Hashimawari of Ippai PDX, known from her focus on Japanese comfort food, curated the most beautiful Bento Boxes, using dulse seaweed from Oregon Seaweed, black cod (one of our favorites), paired with yakisoba noodles, the most perfect 8 minute egg with furikake, and fermented veggies!

Bento boxes were be paired with locally owned, woman made sakes curated by Michelle. Various sakes were tasted and loved!!

For the love of Kewpie mayo!

After indulging in incredible bento boxes, Jane then demonstrate the proper construction of an Onigiri (traditional rice balls) with locally sourced fish, veggies, and seaweed. She shared her love (obsession) of Kewpie Mayo, encouraging the use of it in all things, while making Onigiri’s look so easy! Marinated seaweed was mixed with furikake and kewpie mayo and then incorporated into the rice ball.

If you’ve made it this far, you also get the pro tip on Onigiri, which was NOT to squeeze the ball!

Thank you to Jane and Michelle for creating this very sweet and fun event! We already can’t wait to do it again for years to come. Thanks also to the Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring Winter Waters and making it all possible!
